A technology ban has been put forward and enforced at LU ever since students returned from winter break. The idea of technology in classrooms that was set forward and initiated by Mr. Gibson since he became principal was revoked due to multiple reasons.
Technology was implanted to make everyday life at school easier for students and teachers which meant that textbooks were replaced by e-textbooks and all assignments were sent electronically through the internet. This made grading more efficient for teachers and allowed them to send direct feedback to their students on what was wrong with a particular assignment. However, the trust that was formed was broken by many students who were doing things that did not relate to the class whatsoever. Such as going on social media, playing video games, and being distracted by their devices. The Dean of Students Mr. Danny Fleming also had some comments to make about the situation “What we thought was a good policy had some loopholes,” he said. Teachers may have been too lenient with students and not as attentive as they should have been. Mr. Fleming’s says his main concern with technology in classrooms is teacher supervision and making sure that all teachers stay vigilant at all times. Some teachers were perhaps aware of what was going on but they weren’t punishing those individuals who had crossed the line of the proper use of technology. Mr. Fleming also made it clear that there were multiple events that led up to this decision. “Hoping that we could trust students with technology ended up spiraling out of control and became difficult for teachers to handle,” said Mr. Fleming. Mr. Fleming also denied any rumors that technology will not be part of LU’s curriculum forever stating that it is a “temporary halt” on technology and the school’s administrators are seeking to better the technology policy in the “near future”. It is good to know that technology will become part of LU once again and is not completely ruled out. BY LESLIE BECAUD Spirit Week is a certain time in the year when Learning Unlimited gets extremely creative and allows students to dress up in a particular category. It lasts a whole week and each day of that week students have something different to wear, impress, and show their other classmates and teachers. The school puts out new categories for spirit week each year which makes it twice as exciting.
