Many may not be aware of this, but there is a holiday celebrated on March 22nd known as Tree Day. Tree Day is a holiday in which individuals and groups are encouraged to plant and care for trees. SIMARC students started tree day on our island, and it is run by an archaeologist, Dr. Jay Haviser. They are working together this year with SXM Doet volunteers to promote planting and caring for native and plant trees on the St. Maarten National Day of Trees.
Currently, there are multiple trees that are being cut down for land space on St. Maarten, which may result in a very unhealthy and inhabitable environment. Many people do not take an interest in how important trees are in our community. Trees benefit our island by providing us with oxygen, taming storm water, preventing erosion, absorbing toxins, and much more.
This year, our school is going to celebrate Tree Day. To educate the students at Learning Unlimited about the importance of trees, Mr. Mark, along with a couple of student volunteers, are collecting trees to plant on school grounds. It is important that we have a healthier school environment, which is exactly what these trees will provide us with.
In addition, Mr. Mark is in the process of building a self-sustaining garden at our school, which will expand the agriculture on our island and lead to a cleaner atmosphere. The trees that are going to be planted on Tree Day will be grown in this garden. It will allow students to acquire more knowledge about agriculture and expand their minds on the importance of trees and plants. “We are aiming for an urban forest at our school where fruits and vegetables are grown. We will then donate the fruit and vegetables to the less-fortunate people.” said Mr. Mark.
The main purpose of Tree Day is to put an end to deforestation and to encourage our community to plant more trees. With more trees, the atmosphere in St.Maarten will become a lot more clean, which will lead to a cleaner environment all around. It is important for the students of LU to be aware of the environment around them and make sure it is safe and healthy to live in. BY PRITIKA LAKHWANI
