For returning teacher Mr. Mark, adding agriculture to the LU’s daily diet of culture is a long overdue priority. In September, Mr. Mark got the go ahead to build LU’s first garden, since he genuinely enjoys growing crops and planting seeds.
“The idea is to create a garden that is self-sustaining, it’s a multi-fascinating, it works with out environmental awareness club and our green team,” says Mr. Mark. The idea is to create a garden with a composting feature, as well as an environment in which fruits and vegetables grow. “It gives up some commodities that we can either sell or donate money to the community, and we could also donate to the less- fortunate people,” he adds.
This has been a long-term project. The idea is that the seniors will become the annual managers of the project, and then pass it on to the next group of seniors throughout each generation. Mr. Mark believes that it allows the students to learn about the management and responsibility of a big project. He hopes to add it to science classes in the future so that students are able to learn about agriculture and what its prospects are.
After asking how he adjusts to his time schedule, he replies “The only way I could find time is whenever I have spare time, I go and do as much as I can.” He reports that he did not have much land at the beginning and didn't know what to do with it. Then, Mr. Bill Alcott, founder of LU, very graciously offered him larger land, since he was impressed by what he had done so far. He has been working on Saturday mornings, and tries to do as much as he can. He invites a couple of kids to come and help out with the planting, since it is a lot of work and long term planning.
The garden is located beside the science lab, you will see phase one of the garden, and around the ECC playground is where phase two is located, which also benefits by promoting the children to learn more about agriculture.
The garden has been a great experience and idea so far, it has educated many students and encouraged them to start thinking about starting new projects to take care of the island. This will be a great addition to the future of LU, it will attract more and more students to take part in more projects like this, and it will make an impact on our school environment.
