Every year on March 17th more than 675,000 people gather at Trafalgar Square in London to celebrate a globally known celebration called St. Patrick’s Day. The beginning of this celebration dates back to 385 – 461 AD. It began as a religious feast day for the patron saint of Ireland and today has become an international festival celebrating Irish culture with parades, such as the one in Trafalgar Square, dancing, special foods, and a whole lot of green. The festival commemorates the arrival of Christianity in Ireland, as well as celebrating Irish heritage and culture
In the United States many populous cities, such as Chicago, St. Louis, Cleveland, Kansas City, Savannah, Philadelphia, Buffalo, Boston, and Pittsburgh celebrate St. Patrick’s Day containing 6.9 – 13.5% of Irish in their population. These cities celebrate the festival in many ways. In Chicago they turn the water in their main river system green and in other cities they have parades which bring everyone together wearing green, orange, or white.
Here are 4 ways on how you could start celebrating St. Patrick’s Day in your family household.
1. Gather everything green, shirts, pants, socks, and shoes. Wear as much as green as you can.
2. Create little Irish flags that could decorate the house and get Irish banners that represent Ireland.
3. You and your family can bake cupcakes our cakes decorated with green frosting and little clovers.
4. Invite your friends, and other relatives and enjoy a night together with snacks, Irish beer, and the yummy cupcakes you’ve made.
Enjoy the day, and keep the tradition going on! And as the leprechaun will say, “May your pockets be heavy, and your heart be light. May good luck purse you each morning and night!”
