Many students at LU are getting ready to go off to college around the world. The most popular country to go to is obviously the U.S.; however, over the years Canada has become more visited. Holland is also a good option for Dutch citizens who can receive funding and reduced prices for their studies.
The senior class is already well under way with the application process to several colleges and universities around the world. For example, Natasha Mirpuri got accepted to Niagara College in Ontario, Canada. Dipti Budhrani is also applying to universities in Switzerland for hotel management. Another student in the graduating class, Sebastian Fleming, would like to pursue medicine at one of the following colleges: Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada or Pennsylvania State in Pennsylvania, USA.
The application process has already commenced for the students. “I already applied to both of the colleges I mentioned and I am awaiting an email from them next week,” said one student.
The application process can become stressful, because of the pressure of getting accepted or the fear of being rejected. There are many reasons why a country may be chosen to further your studies; however. for Sebastian, family was an important factor in his decision and choice when choosing a school. “I chose Pennsylvania since I have family there and it would be easier for me to settle in”.
Another factor that comes into play when choosing a college is considering the major you would like to pursue and the university that has the best commodities in that area. “I chose Concordia University and Penn State as an option because of the equipment and laboratories that they offer for medical students”.
Some students also consider other countries such as the UK as an option for their post-secondary studies. “I decided not to go the UK because after looking at it closer it was too expensive and it was also too far away from family and relatives,” Fleming says.
Holland is another option of schools to go to if students of the graduating class are Dutch citizens since there are scholarship opportunities and easier ways of financing their studies. There are many countries and different cultures to experience when studying abroad. BY LESLIE BECAUD
