Currently, more than 30% of LU's students speak a language other than English at home. This number keeps growing every year. This year, students from different countries enrolled at LU to follow classes. We interviewed three on their thoughts and feelings about LU. REPORTING BY MARINE SEQUARIS
Where do you come from?
Bambou (12th grade) comes from the French Side (SXM), Pierre (11th grade) comes from the South of France and Ruben (11th grade) comes from Valencia, a city in Spain.
Why did you chose LU instead of another school?
LU has the best reputation on the island. Once we get back in our country for college, the US system is more appropriate for acceptance. LU is also very welcoming for foreign students and doesn't let the language barrier be a big problem. LU is the only preparatory school on the island, and for the students who are already graduates, it's better to have just classes which are useful in helping learning foreign languages.
After a few weeks, what do you think about the school?
The school is GREAT! The students are friendly and welcoming, the teachers are very cool and kind, and they all have been very patient despite the language differences. The buildings and classrooms are very well equipped and the science lab is awesome! It's a good thing to have the privilege of having a fridge and a microwave in grade 12.
What are the differences with your old school?
There are too many differences to count. Not just the language but also school life and the attitudes in general. LU is a "family size" school, with not many students. The infrastructures are also small. For example, we were not used to wearing uniform before. Teachers and students' attitudes are felt better than the ones in our previous school. And the general organisation of the school itself is 100% organized to make the student's life as comfortable as possible.
And the welcome of the students?
We are all happy with the way things have been handled. Learning Unlimited is a very welcoming school. Just some advice for the students: you should speak more slowly cause it's hard to understand you!
What are the best and the worst points of LU?
The worst points of LU are that there is no canteen where the students can order food or eat and the lunch time which is too short and doesn't leave enough time for the only break of the day. Also the schedule, which is the same everyday. And the best points are in a common agreement, the students and teachers' kindness and patience. ΞΞΞ
