American lunches can be predictable: the standard peanut butter and jelly or ham sandwiches accompanied by a juice box and a dessert of some sort, such as a cookie.
Visit the cafeteria at lunch time at Learning Unlimited, however, and you will see lunches that do not resemble what is considered a stereotypical American lunch. Of course, you will see some American style lunches, but one is just as likely to find a surprisingly diverse selection of exotic and unique food, prepared from home.
Since more than half of students bring their own lunches, a glimpse into what they bring provides a small insight into their home life, culture and diet.
For example, the Ozkan boys set the standard for their variety of healthy foods. They have been following a paleo diet for more than half a year. They eat healthy, whole unprocessed foods.
Jesse Brewer, 9th grade, has the same style lunch every day. Two rolled up pieces of ham or turkey; 2 slices of cheese and an assortment of vegetables. “My lunches may not look like much but they are very filling and easy to make. And when I am feeling frisky I throw in an extra piece of cheese,” says Brewer.
What students bring for lunch has always been the ice-breaker for lunch time gatherings. It always sparks an interest and quickly becomes a conversation starter. This is one of the things that makes life at LU interesting and varied. BY HANAYA MERLET
